The Portland Harbour Breakwater Open Competition

28 th August 2005

It is with great sadness that Weymouth Angling Society has to announce that this competition is 95% certain to be the last ever Breakwater event. John Healy, of Portland Port, has instructed us that they are no longer prepared, on the advice of their insurers, to take the ‘risks’ involved in letting fishing take place on the Breakwater. This competition has long been held in great store as one of the most unusual and difficult, venues for ‘rock fishermen’ in the U.K. and will be a major blow to the Weymouth Angling Society’s Open Competition calendar.

For those who have never fished this venue it will be their last chance, on the 28 th. August 2005, to experience the truly unique conditions of this most challenging and fulfilling endurance competition. In the words of Wyllie salesman, “When it’s gone, it’s gone”.

Signing on begins in Portland Port’s Car Park, in Castletown, Portland, Dorset, at 6 a.m., with a final signing on time of 8 a.m., and boats ferrying competitors to the Breakwater from 6.15 a.m. Fishing will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with the weigh in being at The Weymouth Angling Society H.Q. from 6 p.m.
