2006 Junior Winter League
The first competition was on January 9th when more than 20 juniors turned up to
fish, the under 12s winner that night was Tom Butterworth with a catch that ncluded a
Pollock of lOoz, for the over 12s Andy Shorter was tops with a catch that included 4
weighable Pollock.
The next week (16th) we had the biggest Pollock of the winter league ( 1 Ib 3oz)
caught by Stuart Miller but top senior that night was Tristan Haines with 5 weighable
pout, and the under 12s winner who included a weighable Pollock and 2 pout was Steven
Buik.
And so as the weeks went on and the nights got colder and more young anglers
joined us the fish got harder to find but find them they did and by the end of January the
leagues started to take shape, leading the way for the under 12s was Tom Butterworth
with 90 points with Ashton Corbin 76 points and Sophie Butterwoth on 73, the senior
league was shared by Tristan Haines and Andy Shorter with 96 points with James Lane
in third place on 76 points.
Into February and the main fish were pout and rockling with a few small whiting
and Pollock and the wind got colder, Tom and Sophie Butterworth missed a week and
Sam Short took advantage to go to the top of league with Vicky Lane moving into joint
second with Tom, and the leagues at the end of the month looked like this, under 12s lead
by Sam Short with 169 points, Tom Butterworth 134 points and Vicky Lane 123 points,
the seniors lead by Andy Shorter 192 points, Tristan Haines 190 points and James Lane
152 points.
By March it was hard going some nights with no break in the cold wind and at
times fewer fish but still the juniors turned out to fish and with only 3 competitions in the
month every one was doing their best to move up the league tables and after 11
competitions the tops of the leagues looked like this.

In all 35 juniors fish during the 11 competitions with the average being 25 and for
turning out in what was the coldest winter for years they all deserve to be winners and
many thanks also go to the helpers who gave their time freely, without them we could run
these events.
Species caught during all the competitions included Pollock, Pout, Whiting, Sea Scorpion ,Silver Eels, Rockling 3&5 bearded and various gobies.

Next month (April) we will start fishing on the Stone Pier and hopefully the
weather will start to get warmer and with the lighter nights we may get more fish.
Fishing starts at 6.45pm and finishes at 8.00pm why not COME AND JOIN US.
MONDAY 20th MARCH 06.
The eleventh and final competition of the Winter league, fished as most of the
other matches had been fished, in a cold wind, and as wind was from the east there was
not any shelter from it.
In the under 12s section Sophie Butterworth and Sam Short Both finished with 4
fish points to be joint winners, with Tom Butterworth and Steven Bulk sharing the joint
third place with 2 fish points, and Kathleen Bulk in fifth place with 1 fish point.
The over 12s section went to Andy Shorter with 8 fish points, ahead of Katherine
Corbin and Jamie McCready both with 4 fish points for joint second place, Tristan
Haines came forth with 2 fish points and Ben Peach was fifth with 1 fish point.
The under 12s league was won by Sam Short with a total of 249 points, second
place went to Tom Butterworth with 205 points, Sophie Butterworth moved up to third
place with 149 points thanks to coming joint first on the night, and in forth place we had
Kathleen Buik with 140 points.
Over 12s had Andy Shorter with 268 points, Tristan Haines in second place with
251 points, third place went to Ben Peach 201 points and forth place to James Lane 200
points.
Species caught on the night included small Whiting, Pollock, Pout Sea Scorpions
and Rockling, all fish are returned to the sea alive.
MONDAY 13th MARCH 06.
On what was probably the coldest night so far of this years winter league
18 juniors turn up to fish the penultimate match and although the catches were small they
all counted for league points, Andy Shorter regained the top spot in the over 12s section
with a bag that included a 5 bearded rockling of5oz to get 15 fish points, second place
went to James Lane with 12 fish points and third place was shared between Tristan
Haines and Ben Peach with 8 fish points.
The under 12s section was a much closer affair with three young anglers sharing
first place. Will Medcraft, Tom Butterworth and Nathan Ward each scored 3 fish points,
forth place went to Sam Short with 2 fish points and Owen King came fifth with one fish
point.
Species caught on the night included small Whiting, Pollock, Pout Sea Scorpions
and Rockling, all fish are returned to the sea alive.
MONDAY 6th MARCH 06.
Twenty four juniors turned out for the latest winter league competition on the
pleasure pier and weather wise it was probably one of the better nights with the wind
coming in from a westerly direction, but with it being low water the fishing was not very
good.
The under 12s section was won by Sam Short, he managed to catch enough to
give him 10 fish points, in second place was Jake Male with 6 fish points, in joint third
place we had Tom Butterworth and Will Medcraft with 5 fish points each and then we
had three young anglers sharing fifth place with 3 fish points each Sophie Butterworth,
Steven Bulk and Jay Leiliott.
The over 12s section winner this week was Ben Peach, finished with 9 fish points
with Aaron Baber in second place with 6 fish points, Katharine Corbin came third with 4
fish points and James Lane came forth with 3 fish points.
Species caught on the night included small Whiting, Pollock, Pout Sea Scorpions
and Rockling, all fish are returned to the sea alive
MONDAY 27th FEBRUARY 06.
The only difference between last week and this week was the direction of the
wind, this week it was northwesterly but at least this time we were more sheltered, and
with the start time being at the top of the tide the fishing was better right from the start.
In the under 12s section we had three young anglers tying for first place Vicky
Lane, Sam Short and Owen King each scoring 7 fish points, then it was joint placing for
the next position with Jake Male and Ashton Corbin scoring 5 fish points and Kathleen
Buik finishing 6th with 4 fish points.
For the over 12s section Tristan Haines came 1st for the second week running
scoring 14 fish points and Andy Shorter finishing 2nd again with 10 fish points, James
Lane was 3rd with 6 fish points and three anglers tying for forth place Ben Peach, Jamie
McCready and Dan McSeveny each with 4 fish points.
Probably the best catch of the night was by Aaron Baber, he hooked and landed (
with the help of Mick Channon and a drop net) a lobster of over 41bs.
In the leagues Sam Short is the under 12s leader with 169 points leading Tom
Butterworth 134 points next we have Vicky Lane on 123 points and Kathleen Buik with
120 points.
Over 12s leader is Andy Shorter with 192 points but Tristan Haines is only 2
points behind, then a bit of a gap to James Lane on 152 points with Ben Peach in fourth
spot with 129 points.
Species caught on the night included small Whiting, Pollock, Pout Sea Scorpions
and Rockling, all fish are returned to the sea alive
Congratulations to JAMES LANE. He has been picked to fish for the England
under 16 junior angling team, James who will not be 14 until August will be fishing a
junior international competition at Montrose in Scotland from 29th June -1st July.
Well done James, the good wishes of Weymouth Angling Society and especially
the Junior Section go with you.
MONDAY 20th FEBRUARY 06.
Despite the North Easterly wind blowing across Weymouth bay more than twenty
juniors turned up to fish the seventh match of the Weymouth Angling Society junior
winter league, it was a bitterly cold night with many of the young anglers seeking shelter
along the side of the pier out of the wind.
In the under 12s section Nathan Ward won with 10 fish points just 1 point in front
of Sammy Short with Owen King in third place with 7 fish points and Tommy
Butterworth forth 6 fish points.
Tristan Haines scored 13 fish points to win the over 12s section from Andy
Shorter 7 fish points, Ben Peach came third with 4 fish points and joint fourth place went to
Aaron Baber and Jamie McCready with 2 fish points.
Species caught on the night included small Whiting, Pollock, Pout Sea Scorpions
and Rockling, all fish are returned to the sea alive
MONDAY 30th JANUARY 06.
The winter weather seems to be getting colder but the number of juniors turning
up to fish the winter league grows week by week ,this week 24 brave souls fished on the
Pleasure Pier, the under 12s section was won by Jenna Male with 2 weighable pout for 5
fish points, in second place with 5 fish points each we had Sophie Butterworth and
Sammy Short with Kathleen Buik in forth place with 4 fish points.
The over 12s section went Aaron Baber with 3 weighable pout and a 5 bearded
rockling for 15 fish points, Andy Shorter came second with 12 fishpoints and Will
Medcraft scored 6 fish points in third place.
MONDAY 23rd JANUARY 06.
With a very cold wind blowing in of the sea more than twenty juniors turned out
to fish the third match of the winter series, and while the young anglers braved the cold at
the pier end the helpers huddled in the shelters only venturing out to sort out tangles and
replace hooks.
And despite the cold the fish were biting well, for the under 12 section Jay Lelliott
was having a good night catching several weighable pout to collect 19 fish points and
standing next to him was Nathan Ward also into the pout to finish wim 15 fish points and
come second, in joint third place were Vicky Lane and Ashton Corbin bom having 11
fish points.
In the over 12s section James Lane scored 11 fish points to finish in first place
with Tom Wright scoring 7 fish points in second, third place went to Stewart Miller with
5 fish points and forth place was shared between Andy Shorter and Tristan Haines 3 fish
points each
