Dennings Schools Trophy Competition

Monday 26th June 2006

The rain that had been threatening all day finally arrived just when all the anglers were making their way to the pier and by the start time of 6.45pm it was raining steady, but it was soon forgotten as the young anglers started catching right from the start.

In the junior school section the 'Funky fish' team from Radipole Junior school and the 'Fish fighters' from Port1and’s Tophill were having a real old battle matching each other fish for fish all through the competition, but at the end of 75 minutes it was the 'Funky Fish' team (Sam Short, Tom Butterworth and Ryan Casey) that finished top with a total of 67 beating the 'Fish Fighters' (Nathan Ward, Owen King, Jay & Jessica Lelliott) by 9 fish.

The senior section was even closer with only 6 fish separating the top 3 teams, a last gasp mackerel caught by James Lane gave the Royal Manor 'Rockies' team(Will Medcraft, Billy & Tom Wright and James Lane) a winning total of 56 fish, beating the All Saints 'Floaters' team (Ben Peach, Dan &, Natalie Newman and Lloyd Briggs) by just 2 fish, with 'The Hollies' from Wey Valley(Andy Shorter, Aaron Baber, Jamie McCready and Alex Graham) in 3 rd place with 50 fish.

Junior best specimen went to Matthew Whitted of the 'Little Pollocks' team with a 3oz pout, and in the senior section it was a dead heat with Natalie Newman (Floaters) and Andy Shorter (Honies) both having a 9oz garfish.

Once again the prizes were donated by Paul and Carol Phillips of Dennings Fishing Tackle shop, and we of the junior section would like to say- many many thanks for your continued support., and, thanks also to Mr Steve Matthews of the Dennings team who came along and presented the prizes.

The DENNINGS SCHOOLS TEAM TROPHY COMPETITION 2005.

Organized by Weymouth Angling Society.

Over sixty juniors turned up for this annual fishing competition fished on
Weymouth's Stone pier, as with all of our matches it was run as two sections, under 12s or juniors and over 12s or seniors, and teams made up of up to four competitors.
The competition started at 6-30 and the young anglers were soon catching fish
and keeping the team of helpers busy, with mackerel and gar showing very early it looked as if the scores would be high this year, but after the early rush it slowed down and the anglers along the sides of the pier started to bring pout and wrasse to be counted. The system we use and have used for many years is that each fish counts for one point no matter how small but a fish above the Weymouth clubs minimum size is weighed and awarded one point per ounce, so it can be seen that when a large fish is caught it causes much excitement. All fish are returned to the sea alive after being recorded.

In the juniors section the Radipole Junior school - Sammies Sardines team
consisting of Sam Short, Jenna Male, Sophie and Tom Butterworth scored 79 points to finish 18 points in front the team from Portland's Tophill Juniors - Portland Reelers, team members Jay and Jessica Leiliott, Richard Cruse and Nathan Ward.
The seniors competition went to a mixed team, Lano's Crew, members James and

Vicky Lane, Bruce Wensley and Kathleen Buik with 62 points. Bruce caught 2 mackerel to help boost their score, in second place were the all girls team. Mad Mackerel from All Saints Senior school, team members Leah Short, Sarah Blues, Roselea Gibbs and Rachel Scarff who caught 59 fish.

The specimen prizes went to Billy Wright of the Portland Musketeers (junior)
with a Corkwing wrasse of3oz. And Bryony Diplock from the Squid Squad with a
mackerel of 13oz.

All the prizes were donated by Carol and Paul Phillips owners of DENNINGS
Tackle store and the presentation was made by Mr Steve Matthews a member of the
Dennings team. THANK YOU it is very much appreciated.
