WEYMOUTH CHILDRENS PIER FESTIVAL
MONDAY 21st AUGUST 2006
WEYMOUTH STONE PIER
With a strong north westerly blowing across the harbour most of the juniors went for the outside of the pier with a few of the older ones trying for mackerel and gar off the end of pier, but with only two mackerel and one gar being caught the best fishing was along the outside of the pier.
In the under 12s section it was a very close contest with only 8 fish separating the top three young anglers, in first place was Megan Neilson, only six years old but getting better with every fishing outing, she caught 56 fish beating Sammy Short by just 3 fish with Megan’s brother Jamie Neilson catching 48 fish in third place.
Fourth place went to Tommy Butterworth with 34 fish and fifth with 18 fish was Luke Bedwell, another young girl; Cloe Cook came sixth with 16 fish.
In the over 12s section and making it a girls night was Sophie Butterworth with 43 fish beating second placed Will Medcraft by 7 fish. Third place went to Tom Wright who had 23 fish, fourth was Andy Shorter who caught a 10oz mackerel and the only garfish to finish with 17 fish points and George Crouch had 14 fish to finish in fifth place with Will Sear in sixth place catching 13 fish.
Tackle vouchers were presented to the top three in each section by Jim Churchouse who as been associated with the Weymouth Angling Society Juniors for over 45 years, and many thanks to the helpers without whom we could not run competitions like this, thank you all.
Species caught included Mackerel, Garfish, Pout, Pollock, Ballan and Corkwing Wrasse, Bream and tompot Blennies.
